Neuroptera
Neuroptera, widespread insect order containing about 4700 species, including the antlions, lacewings, and Dobsonflies. The neuropterans are the most primitive, unspecialized insects to undergo a complete metamorphosis in their development.
The larvae have biting or piercing and sucking mouthparts. The larvae of some species are aquatic and have gills.
Many adult neuropterans are predaceous. They have two similar pairs of delicate membranous wings with an extensive network of veins. The name of the order is Greek for "nerve-winged."
